This troubadour makes me happy. Singing with a wonderful mixture of a youthful Bob Dylan mixed with early folkish Bowie, Nik Freitas is going to be a huge star. He plays numerous instruments and his myspace shows a wonderful and promising progression through his three albums. Nik joins up with Jenny Lewis and Rilo Kiley in San Diego on the 15th but if you hurry you can check him out at Spaceland here in LA on the 2nd.

This Berkeley California quartet creates pop. Upbeat youthful harmonies that blend a sort of shins optimism and intelligence with the kind of catchy guitar riffs used by bands like The Kooks and The Arctic Monkeys. No suprise then that The Morning Benders are playing support to The Kooks on their current tour... stopping in Los Angeles May 19th at the Wiltern.

I can't really describe the way this song made me feel and the band doesn't do much to help. Their myspace includes one song only and they claim to come from the "North Hills" of California... which could mean the northern reaches of the state or the hills that fall within a mile of Mulholland. This said "Don't Send Me Away" is a heartbreaking and hauntingly beautiful folk ballad about not wanting to give up on love... Its funny and definitely speaks to a higher level of musicianship on the part of this band. One word: Bravo
